Bake the Night Away

Persian Culture Celebration Festival

December 2023

This project won first place in the Visual Arts category at the Penn State Graduate Exhibition and second place in the DEIB category.

Project brief

This is a vibrant festival designed to introduce the rich culture of Yalda, the Persian celebration of the longest night of the year, to an American and international audience. The event targets young adults, families, and food enthusiasts, appealing to their curiosity about new cultures and love for culinary arts.

The festival’s vision is to create a welcoming, festive atmosphere where people can learn about Yalda traditions while enjoying hands-on baking experiences. We will have stations where attendees can try baking traditional Persian sweets like baklava, guided by expert bakers. Cultural storytelling, music, and dance performances will add to the immersive experience.

Our branding aims to evoke feelings of warmth, joy, discovery, inclusivity, and celebration. These adjectives are central to the festival’s vibe: ‘Warmth’ from the community gathering, ‘joy’ in learning and tasting, ‘discovery’ of new traditions, ‘inclusivity’ in welcoming all backgrounds, and ‘celebration’ of a unique cultural event. By combining cultural education with a fun, engaging environment, “Bake the Night Away” is not just a festival, but a bridge connecting different cultures through the universal language of food and festivity.

Final Design

Poster

This typographic poster draws inspiration from traditional Persian patterns. I have simplified the elements commonly used in a specific form of traditional Persian painting known as Tazhib. The primary colors are red, symbolizing the pomegranate, a key element of Yalda, and dark blue, representing the night. The festival's name features a custom lettermark, and the logo is a stylized interpretation of Persian girih patterns, representing a pomegranate.
