hOurworld in Happy Valley
An interactive learning experience.
August 2022- December 2022
Project brief
This project is the culmination of the Fall 2022 MFA Graphic Design studio, which was a collaborative effort between the Penn State Patee and Paterno Library and the Graphic Design Department. The theme for the semester was "Flourish," and in exploring various ways to interpret and express this concept, the idea of TimeBanking caught my attention.
My Design aims to introduce the concept of Time Banking to Penn State students through an interactive experience using the eight-panel interactive touch screen in the Pattee and Paterno Library Collaboration Commons.
What is TimeBanking?
Time Banking is a time-based currency. Individuals may provide one hour of service to obtain one credit. Then, they may obtain services or contribute them to others using the credits. Time Banking generates an entirely new alternative economy in which all participants' time is valued equally.
Problem
lack of awareness and understanding among Penn State students about TimeBanking and the limited engagement and attention span of visitors to the library's Collaboration Commons.
Goals
Introducing the concept of TimeBanking to students in an engaging way
creating a memorable and educational experience for students
Inspiring students to learn more about TimeBanking and potentially participate in the practice themselves
Research

Choosing The Name
Although the project was named "TimeBanking," I found the name to be too corporate and financial. Instead, I prefer the name "hOurworld," which is the organization where individuals can register their timebanks and begin participating. This name cleverly plays on the word "hour" to reference the time-based nature of TimeBanking, while also incorporating "our" to emphasize the community-oriented and collaborative aspect of the practice. Furthermore, since this project is based in State College, Happy Valley is another name that could be used to reflect the local context.
User Flow
This is the user flow for the primary task of the experience, which is learning about the concept of TimeBanking through interacting with the main character.

Early Prototype Design and testing
The prototype and testing on the full-size screen provided an excellent understanding of the scale, quality of the images, and the placement of focal points in the design.

Happy Valley Landmarks
State College landmarks and Nittany lion have been added to the background to make the design more relatable to students.

Character Design and Other Illustrations
The main character was designed in a way to resemble Edgar Cohn, the person who created the concept of TimeBanking in the 80s. The other illustrations were a combination of the two concepts of time and money as key elements that were repeated through the different screens.

Wireframe Sketches

High Fidelity Prototype
The experience takes place in three different sections: learning the concept through play, history, and definition.
